High Desert West > The Nevada Northern Railway Station is part of this newly designated National Historic Landmark. The station has been the central hub of this large, well-preserved complex since the railroad first came to Ely in 1906. It is still used for selling tickets for rides on the authentic steam and diesel trains that operate as part of the tourist railroad. It's a trip back in time. High Desert West > In the high desert of the Great Basin, very little water exists and the few wetland areas like this one in Spring Valley are important stopovers for migrating waterfowl. It is one of the areas threatened by a proposed pipeline project to carry water to sprawling Las Vegas more than 200 miles away. This is a view from Spring Valley toward the Schell Creek mountain range to the west. The highest original resolution available is 2288x1712 at 72 ppi.
