The lonely whistle of authentic steam engine No. 93 still echoes across the town of Ely, Nevada as it carries tourists along its original historic route. Now a National Historic Landmark, the Nevada Northern Railway Museum in Ely, Nevada is one of the best preserved operating tourist railroads in the United States. Constructed in 1906, the railroad carried copper ore from the Kennecott mine in Ruth, Nevada to the smelter in McGill, Nevada as well as providing freight and passenger service to the Southern Pacific line in Northern Nevada. It operated until the late 1970s when the Kennecott mine closed. Then the entire completely intact complex was given to the City of Ely. The highest original resolution available is 2100x1500 at 72 ppi. Photo copyright Kristi Fillman - HighDesertWest.com
